What is HIP 46880

Along the long serpent of Hydra glows an orange K-type star, about 362 light-years off. Its light set out around 1663, while Robert Hooke was polishing the first lenses he would later use for «Micrographia». Cooler and more reddish than the Sun, its tone recalls old wood lit by a single candle.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 46880 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
