It pulses with an almost imperceptible rhythm in the southern hull of Carina, a blue-white B-class variable whose light took 483 years to reach us. The light we see tonight set out as the Dutch were signing the Twelve Years Truce with Spain, and Galileo first turned his spyglass toward the sky. Its flicker is faint, yet Hipparcos detectors registered it without hesitation.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 51576 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
