Highly luminous starIts story
Upsilon Carinae shines in the southern constellation of the Keel at magnitude 2.92, among the brightest in its region. Its blue-white type-A light has travelled some 1,437 years to reach us —setting out when the Carolingian world was already a memory and Europe was redrawing itself. It belongs to the dense stellar field around Carina, home to some of the most spectacular giants of the southern sky.
