What is Psi 1 Piscium

Psi-1 Piscium is a beautiful double: two near-twin blue-white A stars separated by 29 arcseconds, wide enough to split with binoculars on a clean night. But there is more: the primary is itself another very tight binary, with two stars orbiting each other every 14.4 years. At 275 light-years, she is a knot of four suns woven into the cord of Pisces.

Where it is and when to see it

Psi 1 Piscium lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 60° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 71° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 35° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 69° S.

It ranks no. 33 in brightness among the 79 stars of Pisces in our catalogue. To find it, start from Alpherg, the brightest: it lies about 9° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
