What is HIP 47498
In the keel of the celestial ship, Carina, shines an orange giant whose light has been crossing space for more than three and a half centuries. It set out when European explorers were mapping the South Pacific and French and English navigators were describing islands until then unknown. It is cooler than the Sun yet much larger, a slow K-type bonfire. The constellation, a fragment of the ancient Argo, still evokes those voyages in which the southern sky was an indispensable guide for not getting lost on enormous seas.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 47498 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
