A blue-white B-type ember cuts across Vela with the heat of the hottest stars. Its 830 light-years reach back to the sack of Constantinople in 1204 during the Fourth Crusade: the light arriving tonight set out as Byzantium fell into Latin hands. So scorching it would burn through any close mythology, it glimmers at magnitude 5.12, hovering at the edge of unaided sight.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 46914 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
