What is HIP 46511
The serpent Hydra is the longest constellation of the sky, and among its scales hides this orange K-class star. At 1190 light-years away, its light set out when the Vikings were sailing the Atlantic towards the coasts of Vinland and Al-Andalus was living the splendour of the Caliphate of Córdoba. A warm flicker coiled into the endless snake that crawls across the southern nights.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 46511 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
