Pi-1 Ursae Majoris is a discreet solar neighbour: a G0.5 yellow dwarf only 47 light-years away, with 90% of the Sun's mass and a radius nearly identical. Young —about 200 million years— it shows perceptible chromospheric activity that places it among the gentle variables of the catalogue. To look at it is to look at a Sun like ours, only much younger.
Where it is and when to see it
Pi 1 Ursae Majoris lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
