In the southern Carina the keel burns a blue B-type star whose light has traveled 896 years: it set out while the University of Paris was receiving its first pontifical statutes. Hot and massive, it surpasses the Sun in both size and temperature and pours forth a cold, electric light that recalls lightning before a storm.

HIP 42129 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
