Puppis is the part of the old ship Argo still sailing the southern sky, laden with hot white stars. One of them is this A-type sun, especially luminous, whose light took about 1546 years to reach us. When it set out, the Western Roman Empire had just collapsed and Europe was entering — without knowing it yet — what later ages would call the Early Middle Ages. Its white, fiercer-than-Sun radiance has been crossing the void in silence ever since.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 39734 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
