In the Stern of the ship Argo —a fragment of a constellation too vast for a single name— burns a blue star 1,568 light-years away. Its light departed around the year 458, when Genseric was sacking Rome and the ancient order was collapsing for good. B-type giants are brief furnaces: they burn their hydrogen so voraciously that they scarcely live a hundred million years, against the Sun's ten thousand.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 38846 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
