What is HIP 39061
This yellowish-white class F star shines in Puppis from a little more than 180 light-years away. Its light set out around 1844, the year Samuel Morse sent the first telegram and Europe braced itself for the revolutions of 1848. Hotter than the Sun yet less fierce than its blue neighbours, it offers a warm tone without extremes — a temperate lamp riding between two eras of astronomy.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 39061 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
