1 Cancri is an orange giant 466 light-years away, opening the Crab's Flamsteed list by number though not by brilliance. At magnitude 5.80, in a constellation traditionally subdued, where the Beehive Cluster (M44) draws every eye toward the centre. Its cool, golden light —proper to a K-type star well into maturity— quietly accompanies the parade of zodiacal signs.
