More than fifteen hundred light years stretch between this blue star of Puppis and the terrestrial eye. The light observed today set off in the early Middle Ages, when Christian kingdoms were reclaiming northern Iberia and Byzantium still held a foothold in Italy. It belongs to the hot, young, massive B-types, destined to end their lives in a brief and violent spiral.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 38020 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
