A deep red M-class star in Lynx, 1,173 light-years away: a cool giant whose light comes from the reddest side of the visible spectrum. The light arriving tonight set out around the year 853, in the heart of China's Tang dynasty, when polychrome ceramics and woodblock printing already traveled the Silk Road. Its sustained red contrasts against the almost empty sky of the lynx.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 37369 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
