Its story

74 Geminorum is an M-type red giant 525 light-years away, sheltered in Gemini not far from the line connecting Castor and Pollux. Its cool atmosphere tints the light a deep orange, visible even through binoculars, and its swollen surface betrays a star that long ago consumed the hydrogen in its core. It belongs to that backdrop of cool giants that decorate boreal winters.
