What is Jishui

Jishui preserves the name Chinese astronomy gave to this star in Gemini, linked to an asterism of standing waters or swollen rivers in the old agricultural tradition. It is a yellow-white star 166 light-years away, slightly hotter than the Sun. Its light, observed tonight, set out in a nineteenth century still vigorously debating whether nebulae were clouds of gas or entire galaxies at immense distances.

Where it is and when to see it

Jishui lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 73° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 84° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 22° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 55° S.

It ranks no. 23 in brightness among the 74 stars of Gemini in our catalogue. To find it, start from Pollux, the brightest: it lies about 7° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
