This blue light left Canis Major around the year 442, when Attila's Huns were threatening Constantinople and the Western Roman Empire was crumbling. It is a B-type star, blazing and bluish-white, far hotter than the Sun. Canis Major —home of Sirius— was always the faithful hound of Orion, barking against winter from the southern horizon.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 36251 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
