What is HIP 35509
Canis Minor, the lesser dog accompanying Orion, holds this yellow-white F-type star some 174 light-years away. Its light set out around 1852, the year Foucault's pendulum had demonstrated Earth's rotation in Paris and the British Empire was laying its first submarine cables. Today that F-class wave reaches our telescopes with no delay at all.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 35509 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
