Delta Volantis is a solitary luminous yellow-white giant hanging some 740 light-years away in the small southern constellation of the Flying Fish. With no known companions and no dramatic features, its restraint is its character: a steady, warm point of light, just bright enough for the naked eye, sailing alone through a corner of the sky few northern observers will ever see.
Where it is and when to see it
Delta Volans lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
