What is HIP 34914

On the back of the Greater Dog, Canis Major —faithful companion of the hunter Orion— shines an orange type K star, cool and veteran, an elder sibling of the Sun in years. Its light took roughly 800 years to cross the void: it set out when the Crusader kingdoms were losing Acre and the slow decline of the Byzantine Empire was beginning. It appears today as a tempered ember, faithful witness to the gallop of the celestial dog behind the Hare and beneath Sirius.

HIP 34914 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
