What is Delta Monocerotis
Delta Monocerotis traces a pale point in the Unicorn, that constellation invented in the seventeenth century to fill the void between Orion and Canis Major. A white A-type star nearly four hundred light-years away, young in cosmic terms, it rests in a corner of the sky untouched by ancient legends. Its light crosses the silhouette of the mythical animal with no classical witnesses.
Where it is and when to see it
Delta Monocerotis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
