13 Monocerotis is a white A0 Ib supergiant used as a spectral standard for its class. It outshines the Sun by roughly 10,800 times and sits within the Monoceros OB1 association, midway between the Rosette Nebula and NGC 2264. A small reflection nebula —Van den Bergh 81— wraps it in a diffuse halo. Among A-type supergiants studied with the Hipparcos satellite, it stood out as the least variable: a quiet rarity among restless giants.
Where it is and when to see it
13 Monocerotis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
