ι Volantis shines within the Flying Fish, a southern constellation drawn by Dutch navigators at the end of the 16th century to evoke the flying fish they saw skimming the tropical seas. A hot blue B-type star some 563 light-years away, her light crossed space while great European ships were charting the southern oceans for the first time.
