On the Stern of the ancient Ship glows a blue type-B star, far hotter than the Sun and edged with a cutting light. Its glow crossed 324 years of space: it set off as Bach had just taken up his post as organist in Arnstadt in 1703. Hung above the south, it looks like a cold spark struck from the hull of a vessel no one remembers any more.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 32537 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
