Schedar is the orange giant that occupies the breast of Cassiopeia, the queen seated on her celestial throne. Its name comes from the Arabic «al-ṣadr», 'the chest', and its glow drifts subtly across the years. The light that traces the W of the constellation tonight set out about 228 years ago, when the first optical telegraphs were being invented and the sky had not yet entered any schoolbook.
Where it is and when to see it
Schedar lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
