Segin caps one end of Cassiopeia's W, that unmistakable silhouette wheeling around the northern celestial pole. It is a hot blue star 412 light-years away, young in cosmic terms despite the great distance. Its light set out around the time of the first telescopes peering at the sky, when Galileo was sketching by hand the phases of Venus and the indistinct rings of Saturn.
Where it is and when to see it
Segin lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
