What is HIP 31190

It burns with the intense blue of a B-type star in Canis Major, home of Sirius. Its light set out about 1,750 years ago, around the twilight of the Western Roman Empire, when legions were withdrawing and Germanic kingdoms were emerging in Europe. That blue is the mark of high heat and a short stellar life on cosmic scales. In the brightest dog of the sky, this star keeps a deep post, far from Sirius dazzle.

HIP 31190 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
