What is HIP 31121

In Monoceros, the unicorn of modest skies, glows an orange K-type giant nearly 700 light-years away. Its warm light set out in the days of Marco Polo, as the Venetian returned to Italy after decades at Kublai Khan's court. Cooler than the Sun yet markedly larger, it shines quietly between the edge of the Winter Triangle and the river of the Milky Way.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 31121 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
