Upon Orion's shoulders glows a red giant some 465 light-years away. The light we see today set out when Suleiman the Magnificent was expanding his empire and Europe was translating Copernicus. With a cool, ruddy surface, this star foreshadows the Sun's fate —when, billions of years from now, it exhausts its hydrogen and swells, painting the sky an orange ember.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 30093 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
