What is HIP 28110

In the belt of the hunter Orion shines a white type-A star, hotter and more luminous than the Sun, with a glow as clean as freshly broken ice. Its light has been travelling for 392 years: it set out when Galileo was writing his «Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems» and preparing to confront the Inquisition. It has travelled while modern science was being born painfully in southern Europe.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 28110 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
