A blue B-type star shines in Taurus, the celestial bull, at about 505 light-years. Its light began its journey around 1521, when Magellan and Elcano were completing the first circumnavigation of the world and the very image of the planet was changing forever. Far hotter and brighter than the Sun, its surface easily exceeds 10 000 degrees: a young, vibrant star in the field of ancient Taurean clusters.

HIP 26396 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
