What is 99 Tauri
99 Tauri is a G-type yellow giant 456 light-years away, on the eastern edge of the celestial Bull, not far from the Hyades. It is an enlarged, mature version of a sun like ours, well past the quiet phase of the main sequence. When this light set out, Magellan's ships were only just finishing their first journey around the world.
Where it is and when to see it
99 Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December, when it culminates around midnight.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 66° S.
It ranks no. 121 in brightness among the 144 stars of Taurus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Aldebaran, the brightest: it lies about 9° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
