What is HIP 26001
In Dorado, the constellation that guards the road to the Large Magellanic Cloud, shines a yellow star resembling the Sun yet more luminous and mature. Its light has been crossing space for more than two centuries: it set out when Beethoven was premiering his first symphonies and Europe was being shaken by the Napoleonic wars. The little constellation was sketched by Dutch navigators who stitched new figures into the southern sky, and this star is one of its most intimate points, almost domestic in its golden tone.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 26001 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
