117 Tauri is an M-type red giant, a cold and dilated star whose surroundings take on a reddish tone visible through the telescope. It inhabits the edges of Taurus, that zodiacal constellation where the Pleiades and Hyades shine. Its light takes more than six centuries to cross the space between us, departing from the era before the discovery of America.
Where it is and when to see it
117 Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
