One of the blue gems of Lepus, the hare forever fleeing beneath Orion. Its light set off 278 years ago, when the French Encyclopaedists were gathering the knowledge of the world and Linnaeus was ordering living nature. A B-class star —hot, massive, intensely blue— its brilliance is far more energetic than the Sun's and will last only a few tens of millions of years.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 24505 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
