What is HIP 23831
In Lepus, the hare forever fleeing beneath Orion's feet, shines a yellow star, a relative of the Sun. Its light began its journey 120 years ago, when the Wright brothers were achieving their first powered flight at Kitty Hawk and the first effective vaccine against yellow fever was being discovered. Warm in colour and similar in temperature to the Sun, it shines with the same light that would one day fall upon any world orbiting it.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 23831 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
