83 Tauri is a yellow-white F-type star only 148 light-years away —a modest distance by Taurean standards. Hotter than the Sun and a touch whiter in colour, it sits in the narrow spectral band where astronomers carefully look for stars potentially akin to our own. Its light, set out near the start of the twentieth century, now enters the field of any amateur telescope.
