What is 71 Tauri

71 Tauri belongs to the Hyades, the closest open cluster to us, lying about 160 light-years away. An F-type star, slightly hotter and more luminous than the Sun, its light does not stay still: it pulses as a Delta Scuti variable, with subtle hour-long oscillations that betray waves crossing its interior. A star the ear cannot hear —but photometry listens to.

71 Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.
