Upsilon Tauri belongs to the Hyades, the elder sisters of the Pleiades and the closest open cluster to the Sun, about 154 light-years away. It is a rare Delta Scuti variable pulsating every 3.6 hours, and one of the cluster's giddiest gyroscopes: a full rotation every 0.4 days, equator racing at 243 km/s. Young, fast, throbbing.
Where it is and when to see it
Upsilon Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
