What is Psi Tauri

Psi Tauri is a yellow-white star just 90 light-years away, set within the field of the Bull but unrelated to the Hyades cluster surrounding it in perspective. Of type F1 V, it retains 1.6 solar masses and 1.4 solar radii, and spins at 45 km/s after 1.4 billion years of existence. One of those stars that seem to accompany a famous asterism without belonging to it — a mere geometric coincidence of the sky.

Where it is and when to see it

Psi Tauri lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 68° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 78° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 27° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 61° S.

It ranks no. 59 in brightness among the 144 stars of Taurus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Aldebaran, the brightest: it lies about 14° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
