Taygeta is one of the seven sisters of the Pleiades, the blue points that sparkle in Taurus like a swarm of jewels wrapped in residual gas. In Greek myth she was a daughter of Atlas and Pleione, pursued by Orion until raised into the sky. She shines from 409 light-years: her light set out when Cervantes was beginning to publish the first parts of Don Quixote.
Where it is and when to see it
Taygeta lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
