Nu Persei
What is Nu Persei
Nu Persei is an F-type giant burning at 557 light-years, in a region of Perseus crowded with young stellar associations and thick with galactic dust. Its yellow-white colour falls right at the boundary between the hot stars and the solar ones: a tone almost indistinguishable to the naked eye, yet betraying a surface hotter than the Sun and a shorter lifespan ahead.
Where it is and when to see it
Nu Persei lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.
- From London it never sets and culminates about 81° up.
- From New York it culminates about 88° above the horizon.
- From Sydney it culminates about 14° above the horizon.
It can be seen from anywhere north of 47° S.
It ranks no. 9 in brightness among the 99 stars of Perseus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Mirfak, the brightest: it lies about 8° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
The light you see today left it about 560 years ago.
