She shines in the shoulder of Perseus, set within the field where the Alpha Persei association scatters its young blue giants. Designated δ Persei, she is a hot B-type star with subtle luminosity pulses —a faint heartbeat— that betray the complexity of her atmosphere. Her light set out more than five centuries ago, when oceans were still being charted.
Where it is and when to see it
Delta Persei lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
