What is HIP 16509

In quiet Horologium, almost at the southern depths of the sky, an orange class K star travels in from some 312 light-years away. Its light set out around 1713, when the Peace of Utrecht was being signed and Europe was redrawing its borders after the War of the Spanish Succession. Cooler than the Sun and faint to the naked eye, it asks for patience to be found in a corner seldom visited by the human gaze.

Where it is and when to see it

HIP 16509 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never rises above the horizon.
From New York it never rises above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 74° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 40° N.
