What is Azha

Azha shines orange at 137 light-years from the Earth, set in a quiet bend of the constellation Eridanus. Its Arabic name derives from «al-`udhi», the ostrich's nest: astronomers of the Baghdad caliphate saw in this particular stretch of sky a flock of birds crouched on the sand, ready to take wing at first light of dawn. A warm, modest, unpretentious star, reaching the European eye from a time before domestic electricity and the lit cities that today wipe out, almost at a single stroke, most of what was once the night sky.

Where it is and when to see it

Azha lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.

  • From London it culminates about 30° above the horizon.
  • From New York it culminates about 40° above the horizon.
  • From Sydney it culminates about 65° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 81° N.

It ranks no. 13 in brightness among the 129 stars of Eridanus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Achernar, the brightest: it lies about 51° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).

The light you see today left it about 140 years ago.
