What is 17 Persei
17 Persei is a swollen, mature K5 orange giant burning at around 4,000 K —considerably cooler than the Sun— and resting 467 light-years away, in the mythic torso of the hero Perseus. Its amber light travels for sixteen human generations before reaching an observer's eye on Earth. Modest to the unaided eye, its warm hue still sets it apart from the brilliant blue-white stars that crowd the constellation.
Where it is and when to see it
17 Persei lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November, when it culminates around midnight.

- From Sydney it culminates about 21° above the horizon.
It can be seen from anywhere north of 55° S.
It ranks no. 24 in brightness among the 99 stars of Perseus in our catalogue. To find it, start from Mirfak, the brightest: it lies about 16° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
