Psi Persei is a hot blue-white B-type star nearly six hundred light-years away, a probable member of the Per OB2 association, a brotherhood of young, massive suns born from the same gas cocoon. It is also variable: it spins so quickly on its axis that it casts off an equatorial disk of glowing gas whose brightness flickers with time. A restless star in full youth, set in the mythological heart of Perseus.
Where it is and when to see it
Psi Persei lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
