What is HIP 1288
In the southern and discreet Sculptor, far from the bustle of the Milky Way, glows this orange K-type star. Its light set out around 497 years ago, near 1529, when Juan Sebastián Elcano completed the first voyage around the world and proved the planets roundness. Cooler than the Sun yet swollen by time, it offers a warm orange typical of stars that have traveled most of their lives. Its surroundings form a relative gap in the sky, nearly empty of bright stars, where it stands out clearly.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 1288 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is September: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
