What is Tau Sculptor
Tau Sculptoris is a yellow-white F-type star about 226 light-years away, in the constellation of the Sculptor —another modern stroke by Lacaille, devised to honour the artist's workshop. The region is discreet, with no bright stars, but it hides the south Galactic pole, a clean window toward extragalactic depths. Tau is one of the small beacons adorning that silent corner of the sky.
Where it is and when to see it
Tau Sculptor lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is October: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
